Gulf Shores Beach Vacation Information

If your fantasy vacation involves relaxing on the warm sand and listening to the surf, you won't find a better place to turn your dream into reality than Gulf Shores. The sun shines most of the time in this beachside paradise, where sugar-white sands and the sparkling waters of the Gulf of Mexico are never far away.

Even if you're not much of a beach potato, you should give Gulf Shores a second look. It may be a small town – the year-round population is just over 7,000 – but when it comes to vacation fun, it delivers big. Swimming, fishing, sailing, and other water sports are all popular pastimes. The area also offers plenty of places to shop, eat, golf, and otherwise have a good time, no matter what your age or the size of your family.

Both the young and the young at heart will have a ball at Waterville USA, a 20-acre combination water and amusement park whose attractions include a giant roller coaster, a miniature golf course, and the only Flowrider simulated surfing tank on the Gulf Coast. And everybody will enjoy a stop at the Gulf Shores Museum, which includes a fascinating exhibit on hurricanes. Excursions to nearby Forts Morgan and Gaines are well worth the trip as well. Fort Morgan, at the mouth of Mobile Bay, and Fort Gaines, on Dauphin Island, both played important roles in the 1864 Civil War Battle of Mobile Bay. Another popular attraction that makes a great day trip is Bellingrath Gardens, a 65-acre estate near Mobile featuring an English Renaissance-style mansion set amid beautifully landscaped grounds.

For those who appreciate nature at its unspoiled best, there's Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, a 7,000-acre habitat for birds, sea turtles, and the endangered Alabama beach mouse. Well-marked walking trails are easy to navigate, and guided nature tours are offered seasonally. Nearby, at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab Estuarium, interactive exhibits showcase the aquatic animal and plant life of the Gulf Coast and Mobile Bay.

The golfing is good at Kiva Dunes, an 18-hole course designed by Jerry Pate. Also nearby is Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club. Adjacent to Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, it offers 27 holes of championship golf amid live oaks, cypress trees, and other native vegetation.

With mild weather pretty much year-round, the Gulf Shores area plays host to a number of special events that always draw a crowd. October's award-winning National Shrimp Festival has been a local tradition for more than 40 years. The Frank Brown International Songwriter Festival, another popular event held every November in Gulf Shores and other nearby communities, offers performances by Grammy Award winners as well as up-and-coming stars. And May's Hangout Music Fest, founded by the owner of the popular Hangout restaurant and bar, has become one of the premier musical attractions in the country, bringing artists such as the Dave Matthews Band, Jack White, and Paul Simon to Gulf Shores.
